Stomatitis

What it means

Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes of any of the structures in the mouth.

Principal causative agents include herpes simplex virus (HSV), which causes recurrent herpetic stomatitis particularly in T-cell deficiencies, and Coxsackievirus (hand-foot-and-mouth disease), which may be unusually severe or prolonged in antibody deficiencies.
