Hyperautofluorescent macular lesion

What it means

Increased amount of autofluorescence in the macula as ascertained by fundus autofluorescence imaging.

A large portion of hyper-autofluorescent lesions results from alterations in lipofuscin metabolism. Accumulation of lipofuscin in RPE cells, accumulation of bisretinoids in photoreceptor outer segments, and photooxidation of bisretinoids in lipofuscin can all contribute to enhanced autofluorescence.
