Attenuation of retinal blood vessels

What it means

Narrowing of the retinal blood vessels, both arterioles and venules.

Attenuation of retinal blood vessels is commonly seen in conditions with reduced photoreceptor cell metabolism and intact choroid, such as Retinitis Pigmentosa or vitamin A deficiency, or loss of inner retina, such as after central retinal artery occlusion. Narrowing may also be seen in accelerated hypertension and chronic hypertension.
