Femoral retroversion

Externally rotated hips

HP:0008796

What it means

An abnormal backward rotation of the hip relative to the knee such that the hips are externally rotated with the foot pointed outward instead of straight ahead (out-toeing).

Femoral torsion, also known as femoral rotation or femoral version, refers to the twist between the proximal and distal parts of the femur on the transverse plane. Femoral anteversion averages between 30-40 degrees at birth, and between 8-14 degrees in adults. This term applies if the amount of femoral torsion is below this range.

The range is how often this sign appears among people diagnosed with each disease — it is not a probability of having any of them. Many of these signs also occur in common, non-rare conditions. A sign on this page is a conversation to have with a clinician, not a conclusion.
