Abnormal DLCO

What it means
An abnormal amount of oxygen passes into the blood from the lungs and/or an abnormal amount of carbon dioxide passes from the blood into the lungs.
Inhaled CO is used for this test due to its high affinity for hemoglobin (200-250 times that of oxygen). During a ten-second breath-hold, DLCO measures uptake of CO per unit time per mm of driving pressure of CO (cc of CO/sec/mm of Hg).
