What it means
Any deviation from the normal concentration of bicarbonate, HCO3[-], in the circulation.
Bicarbonate represents the second largest category of anions in plasma. The measurement of bicarbonate also captures carbonate (CO3[-2]) ions, carbon dioxide in solution, and carbamino compounds but the latter represent a tiny fraction of the total measured amount.
