Self-limited epilepsy with autonomic seizures

ORPHA:98815Disease

Also called Benign childhood occipital epilepsy, Panayiotopoulos type · Early-onset benign childhood occipital epilepsy · Panayiotopoulos syndrome · SeLEAS

What it is

A form of rare self-limited childhood occipital epilepsy characterized by focal seizures with autonomic features, such as nausea, vomiting, pallor, and cardiorespiratory changes, in addition to visual disturbances. Patient shows a fluctuation in symptoms and awareness during the same seizure event. Seizures are typically long lasting. This syndrome is the most common cause of afebrile, nonconvulsive status epilepticus in childhood. Seizures typically begin between the ages of 3 and 6, with remission usually occurring within 2 or 3 years. They are usually infrequent, however in some patients they can be frequent or disruptive. There is no impact on neurodevelopment, unlike self-limited childhood focal epilepsies.

Key facts

Prevalence
1-9 / 1 000 000 (annual incidence, United Kingdom)
Classified as
Disease

Prevalence figures describe populations, not individuals, and are often estimates from a single study. Where the figure is an incidence or a birth prevalence, it says so.

ICD-10 codes

G40.0filed under a broader ICD-10 category — shared with 8 other rare diseases

ICD-10 has no distinct code for most rare diseases, so many are filed under the nearest available one. A shared code identifies the group, not this disease — the ORPHAcode above is what identifies it.

Related health topics

Reached through the ICD-10 categories this disease is filed under, so these describe the broader group rather than this disease specifically.
