What are veterans’ housing grants for?

These grants can help pay for changes to a home, such as:

• Wheelchair ramps

• Wider doorways

• Roll-in showers

• Other accessibility improvements

There may be money available for:

• Buying or building a home to help with your disability

• Making changes to your existing home or one you plan to buy

• Making changes to a family member's home

Eligibility for veterans’ housing grants depends on your disability and military service.

What are the types of housing grants for veterans?

You may be eligible to receive one of the following grants:

• Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant: Helps eligible veterans buy, build, or change a home to make it more accessible. You must own (or will own the home) and have a qualifying service-related disability.

• Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grant: Helps eligible veterans pay for accessibility improvements to an existing home or buy a home with accessible features. You or a family member must own (or will own the home) and you must have a qualifying service-related disability.

• Temporary Residence Adaptation (TRA) grant: Helps pay for accessibility changes to a family member's home if an eligible veteran is living there temporarily (for a short time). You must be living temporarily in a family member’s home that needs changes to meet your needs, and you must qualify for an SAH or SHA grant.

If you qualify for an SAH or SHA grant, you can use it up to 6 different times over your lifetime. You don't have to use the full amount at once. If money is left over, you may use it for future home modifications. The maximum grant amount may also increase over time based on construction costs.

How do I apply for a veterans’ housing grant?

Before you apply, you’ll need these documents:

• Your Social Security number

• Your VA file or claim number (if you have one)

Click on the button above. When you arrive on the site, click “Sign in to Start Your Application.” If you do not already have an ID.me or Login.gov account, you must create one first to submit an application online.

The VA will review your claim and mail you a letter with their decision. You can also sign in to VA.gov anytime to check the status of your claim.
