Texas Property Tax Deferral Program

State

The Property Tax Deferral Program can give you more time to pay your property tax. The state will charge interest on any deferred (delayed) property tax. The delayed taxes and all interest charged must be repaid to the state if you sell or transfer your residence. You can get help from this program if you are at least 65 years of age or have a disability. You can also get help if you are at least 55 years of age and you are the surviving spouse of a homeowner who was getting the deferral at the time of his or her death.

About this program

How can this program help me?

The Property Tax Deferral Program can give you extra time to pay property taxes on your primary residence (home). It does not cancel the property taxes you owe. You will have to pay interest on any delayed property tax. You can delay the payment of your property tax for as long as you own and live in the same home. The delayed taxes and all interest charged must be repaid to the state if you sell or transfer your residence.

Please check with your local tax office, since the program is not available in every county in Texas.
