About this program

The Georgia Property Tax Deferral Program helps qualified homeowners in Georgia have more time to pay their property taxes. This can help free up money for everyday expenses like food, utilities, medicine, and other living costs.

What is the Georgia Property Tax Deferral Program?

The Georgia Property Tax Deferral Program allows qualified homeowners to postpone paying some property taxes until a later time. This can provide short-term financial relief and free up money for other essential expenses. However, deferred taxes are not forgiven—interest is charged on the amount owed, and it must eventually be repaid. In most cases, repayment is required when:

-

The home is sold or ownership changes, or

-

Certain program limits are reached, such as a percentage of the home’s value

Do I qualify for the Georgia Property Tax Deferral Program?

To qualify for the Georgia Property Tax Deferral Program, your home must already be receiving a homestead exemption. A homestead exemption helps eligible homeowners lower the amount of property taxes they pay on their primary home. In addition to receiving a homestead exemption, you must also:

-

Be age 62 or older

-

Own and live in the home

-

Have a household income within the program’s income limits (currently at $15,000 or less)
