Assessment Freeze for Age 65 or Disabled Homeowners Program
State
This program limits how much the assessed (estimated) value can increase each year for a home you own and live in. You can take part in this program if you are age 65 or older or you have a disability.
About this program
Property taxes can be a challenge—especially if you’re on a fixed income, especially older adults and people with disabilities living on a fixed income. The Assessment Freeze for Age 65 or Disabled Homeowners Program can help lower these costs.
By “freezing” the assessed value of your home for property tax purposes, this program can help keep your property taxes from going up over time, making homeownership more affordable.
What is the Assessment Freeze for Age 65 or Disabled Homeowners Program ?
This program gives property tax relief to homeowners by “freezing” the taxable value of your home. This means your property taxes are based on your home’s assessed value when the freeze takes effect.
-
If you already own your home, the value can be frozen at the next assessment after you turn 65 or become disabled
-
If you buy a home at age 65 or older or while disabled, the value can be frozen at the next assessment after you purchase it
Note: Your home’s assessed value may still increase if you make major improvements or add new construction. And your property taxes may still change if local tax rates increase.
