Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) - South Dakota

State

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) can provide you with certain foods at no cost. You may be able to get help from this program if you are 60 years of age or older, meet the program guidelines, and live in a county or community that offers CSFP.

About this program

If you are 60 or older and live in South Dakota, you may be able to get a free box of food each month through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). The program helps older adults with low incomes get nutritious food to add to their meals.

Each food box weighs about 40 pounds and includes a variety of foods you can use to prepare meals at home. A box is worth about $50 in food.

How does the South Dakota Commodity Supplemental Food Program work?

CSFP provides eligible older adults with a monthly box of USDA foods. The food is meant to add to what you already have at home. It does not provide all the food you need for the month, but it can help you get more nutritious foods and spend less on groceries.

The foods in your box may change from month to month. A typical box may include shelf-stable foods such as:

-

Canned fruits and vegetables

-

Canned meats, such as beef, pork, or beef stew

-

Pasta or rice

-

Dry beans or peanut butter

-

Fruit juice

-

Dry cereal

-

Cheese

-

Powdered or canned milk

CSFP is provided through local agencies across South Dakota. These agencies help determine who qualifies, distribute food boxes, and provide nutrition education.

You can get CSFP food even if you also receive help from another food assistance program, including SNAP.

You may qualify for CSFP in South Dakota if you:
